Carrot “Hot Dogs”

Carrot “Hot Dogs”

An easy and incredibly delicious plant-based option for your next BBQ that everyone will be able to enjoy.  These vegan Carrot “Hot Dogs” are made with minimal ingredients and are completely customizable. Just add your bun and toppings, and you truly might believe you are eating a real hot dog.

Surprisingly Realistic

I know it might be hard to believe but these are actually really good! We have not craved a meat hot dog since beginning our plant-based journey. However, we decided to try these anyway and we were pleasantly surprised.

No, it doesn’t taste exactly like a real hot dog- it’s better!  This marinated carrot is tangy and smoky and it leaves you feeling good because it is essentially just a veggie sandwich. Comforting and healthy? Yes, please!

The Marinating Time is Worth It!

These plant-based dogs do require a little time. But whatever you do, don’t skimp on the marinating. The vinegar, soy sauce, liquid smoke and other seasonings bring this carrot to another level.

Simply prepare your carrots the night before and then let them soak in all of the delicious marinade flavor overnight. After that, you just need to grill them either on a grill pan indoors or on your outdoor grill so they acquire a smoky grill taste with visible grill marks.  Yes, they will look like hot dogs when you are done.

Next, dress your carrots in a tasty bun with any toppings of your choosing and that’s it. In short, you will have one amazing meat-free option for the herbivores at your next gathering or maybe even for the carnivores too!

Description

A delicious and easy meat-free option for your next BBQ. These vegan carrot “hot dogs” taste shockingly like the real thing but a much healthier option that everyone can enjoy!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 Medium Carrots (or possibly more, depending on the dish used for marinating.)
  • 1 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 Cup Water
  • 2 tbsp. Soy Sauce (or Liquid Aminos)
  • 1 tbsp. Liquid Smoke
  • 2 Cloves Garlic (crushed)
  • 1 tbsp. Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • Salt and Pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Wash and peel carrots making them the desired length and size to fit a hot dog bun. Then, peel and crush the garlic.
  2. In a large pot filled about halfway, bring water to a boil. Place the carrots in the boiling water and cook for 7-8 minutes. Be sure to keep an eye on them because you do not want them to overcook and start to split.
  3. In a large bowl, combine all of the ingredients. When the carrots are finished boiling place them into the large bowl. Cover and let set for at least four hours (We usually allow them to sit overnight).
  4. Cook on the grill or using a grill pan on the stove top until slightly charred and grill marks are formed.
  5. Serve with caramelized onions or your own favorite condiments. We recommend leafy greens, radishes for a crunch, cilantro, and of course a little hot sauce but traditional hot dog condiments taste great too.
  6. Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
