Of course, you can always make traditional Carrot “Hot Dogs” like our earlier classic recipe.  However, if you are looking for a fun new twist, you don’t want to miss these Vegan Bánh Mì Carrot Hot Dogs!

In addition to the smoky carrots, this recipe also includes quick pickled veggies, avocado creama, jalapeño, and fresh cilantro. In other words, TONS of flavor!  But don’t worry, they can also be made in a grill pan if outdoor grilling isn’t an option. Thank goodness!

What You Will Need to Make Bánh Mì Carrot Hotdogs

It will take a little time to get your ingredients ready, but trust us- it is worth it!

  • Carrots  The key ingredient! Choose carrots that are similar in size to a traditional hot dog to make the most of your bun.  However, if they are smaller and skinnier, you can also add more than one carrot to each bun.
  • Hot Dog Marinade – This smoky marinade will turn your carrots into “hot dogs!”  Made with apple cider vinegar, liquid aminos (or soy sauce), liquid smoke, garlic, smoked paprika, and garlic powder, this will actually smell like hot dogs. It might be a little shocking but so worth it!
  • Quick Pickled Veggies – This easy recipe can be made at home. It can also be adjusted slightly if needed. If you can’t find daikon, it can be omitted along with the jalapeño and onion if you prefer a milder heat level.
  • Cilantro – This fresh herb adds brightess that is a nice contrast to the smoky carrot.  We like to add lots of cilantro!
  • Jalapeño  –This optional ingredient can bring the heat. If you would rather not have fresh jalapeño, pickled can also be used for a tamer version or just include sliced jalapeño with your quick pickled veggies.
  • Avocado CremaThis creamy sauce will add richness to your meal. It’s made with avocado, lime juice, dairy-free yogurt, and spices. It will taste incredible on your carrot dog but it can also be used for tacos, salads, dipping French fries, and so much more. You may have extra but chances are, you won’t have any trouble using it! We also recommend using an immersion blender for mixing if you have one.
  • Hot Dog Buns –Any bun will work, including gluten-free. We have even cut our carrots and put them on a hamburger bun, so that is always an option too. 😉

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Do these actually taste like hot dogs?

    • Honestly, YES!  I know it may seem a little strange but these really do taste like hot dogs. The flavor really is all in the marinade. Others may give you the side eye but you will feel so much better eating a healthy and tasty meal that you actually know what it is made from. We would suggest bringing extra to a BBQ because chances are, meat eaters will even want to try it!
  • Do the carrots have to marinate overnight?

    • Marinating the carrots overnight (or for at least 6-8 hours) will allow the carrots to fully absorb the smoky marinade.  You can try a shorter length but just be aware that your “hot dogs” might not be as flavorful and may taste more like a carrot.
  • Can you use another vinegar?

    • Instead of apple cider vinegar you can also use rice or white vinegar. Rice vinegar will provide a milder flavor and white vinegar will be a little more vibrant.
  • Do these keep well?

    • Yes! The carrots will last for up to 5 or 6 days in the refrigerator. We would recommend storing them separately from the quick pickled veggies and other ingredients.  Also, they be made in advance prior to a BBQ or party and just warmed the day of the event.  So easy!
  • Can this recipe be made gluten-free?

    • Absolutely.  If you would rather not use a gluten-free bun, you can also serve the “hot dog” over lettuce for a salad or use a large lettuce leaf, such as a collard green, to make a carrot hot dog wrap.  Another option is to use a baked potato or baked sweet potato as a bun.
