These Dukkah Crusted Tofu Strips are protein packed and incredibly flavorful. They are an ideal power source for people following a plant-based diet.
Versatile Tofu
Tofu has long been a staple in vegetarian and vegan kitchens. It’s readily available and it’s so versatile and adaptable for a variety of recipes.
For these Dukkah Crusted Tofu Strips you will need to use extra-firm tofu. The firm texture allows the tofu to be cut into bite-size strips without breaking apart into pieces. However, you will need to be sure to firmly press the tofu with paper towels or a clean dish cloth to remove as much of the water as possible.
Dukkah- Your New Favorite Condiment
But the real reason these Tofu Strips are over the moon delicious is thanks to their complex dukkah coating. Dukkah is an Egyptian spice that is made with chopped nuts and a smorgasbord of spices.
Dukkah can be found at most grocery stores nowadays including Trader Joe’s or it can easily be made at home which is what we opted to do for this recipe.
An Important Step
One element that can’t be missed is dry roasting the seeds and nuts. It adds a deep smokiness to the spices and gives the dukkah complexity. Simply dry roast the nuts and seeds in a pan before chopping with the spices in a food processor.
Here are the nuts and seeds you will need:
- Hazelnuts
- Almonds
- Sesame Seeds
Easy Homemade Dukkah Crusted Tofu Strips!
Once you have your dukkah, use the flax egg to coat your tofu strips and then cover with the dukkah. We suggest using parchment paper on your sheet pan for easy cleanup because the coating does tend to make a mess. Then bake until the strips are nice and crispy.
These Dukkah Crusted Tofu Strips are ridiculously tasty and easy enough to make often! Enjoy!

Description
These homemade plant-based strips are what dreams are made of… Extra firm tofu coated in savory dukkah made from almonds, hazelnuts, sesame seeds, and LOTS of spices. A healthy vegan protein that will be requested again and AGAIN!
Ingredients
Dukkah:
1/2 Cup Raw Almonds
1/3 Cup Raw Hazelnuts
2 Tbsp Raw Sesame Seeds
1 tsp Ground Cumin
1 tsp Ground Coriander
1/4 tsp Allspice
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Pepper
Tofu Strips:
2 Tbsp Flax Seed Meal
6 Tbsp Warm Water
1 Brick Extra Firm Tofu
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Place the warm water and flax seed meal in a bowl and stir to combine. Set aside.
- In a dry frying pan over medium heat, toast the almonds, hazelnuts and sesame seeds for 3-5 minutes. The edges of the sesame seeds will become slightly brown.
- Place the toasted nuts/seeds and the dry spices into a food processor and pulse until it becomes a coarse like consistency. Transfer to a large bowl and set aside.
- Drain the tofu, wrap it in a paper towel and press it slightly to extract as much liquid as possible. Do not press too much to compromise the shape.
- Cut the tofu into your desired shape. We like finger sized strips.
- Dip each piece of tofu into the flax mixture and then into the dukkah. Make sure the tofu is coated completely in the mixture.
- Place the coated pieces onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes. Turn the pieces once halfway through to encourage even browning.
- Serve immediately while warm. They can be enjoyed plain or with your favorite condiment for dipping.
- Refrigerate leftovers in an air-tight container for up to 5 days. When reheating, we recommend using the oven so they remain crispy.
