Vegan Sugar

To be honest, sugar was one of the ingredients that slipped by our radar for a while. We always assumed that it was safe for vegetarians and vegans alike but quickly learned that that was not the case.

Most traditional refined sugar is actually processed by using a bone char filtration in order to achieve a clear white color. Therefore, it is not suitable for those wishing to avoid animal products.

However, now a variety of granulated sugar brands are vegan friendly and labeled as such but it can be difficult to find confectioners’ sugar, also known as powdered sugar, that is safe for vegetarians and vegans alike.

But we have great news… All you need is a blender to make your own! That’s right, this honestly really isn’t even a recipe but we decided we would share this information in case others were in the same predicament that we found ourselves in.

Therefore, we decided to try blending traditional sugar to see if that would create a suitable powder. Long story short, it does!

Best yet, this works with any type of granulated sugar: turbinado sugar, coconut sugar, or vegan cane sugar. Although, out of the three, cane sugar will be the whitest in color but the others can also be used.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • Vegan Granulated Sugar Sweet and crunchy, this vegan friendly sugar is just waiting in your cupboard to be made into light and airy confectioners’ sugar.
  • Cornstarch (Optional)  This kitchen staple is an excellent weapon against clumps and caking. Try it if you live in a humid climate.

FAQ & Homemade Vegan Confectioners’ Sugar Tips:

  • Is confectioners’ sugar the same as powdered sugar?

    • Yep. The terms are interchangeable and this sugar will work for any recipe that calls for either.
  • Do you need a special blender or container for this recipe?

    • Any blender should work as long as it is in good working order. Additionally, although there are also dry blender containers on the market, a traditional container also works.
  • How will I know what granulated sugar is suitable for vegans?

    • In our experience, if it is safe for vegetarians and vegans, it will be clearly marked on the package. However, Beet sugar, Turbinado and Coconut Sugar are always vegan because of the way they are processed without the use of bone char.
  • Tip: Add Cornstarch if you don’t plan on using your sugar immediately or if you live in a humid climate.

    • In order to avoid clumping, 1 Tbsp of cornstarch per 1 Cup of Sugar can be added during blending, to prolong the shelf life of your confectioners’ sugar. In addition, if you live in a humid climate, you may also want to add cornstarch regardless.
