Jackfruit Sichuan Wonton Soup

Jackfruit Sichuan Wonton Soup

Oh… my… goodness. This Jackfruit Sichuan Wonton Soup is simply bursting with flavor and amazing faux meat texture. This hot and spicy soup delivers and then some!

Jackfruit = Amazing Plant-based Faux Meat

If you have followed our blog for any time at all, you probably already know that we L.O.V.E. jackfruit!  It’s just so versatile and it provides a meaty texture to countless dishes while soaking up sauces or seasoning spectacularly. It is one of those ingredients that will have meat eaters smacking their lips right along with you.

The easiest method for preparing jackfruit is buying the canned young jackfruit in brine. Trader Joes carries jackfruit but THIS is another brand that we like. It will be in triangle shaped wedges that can easily be pulled apart with a fork or your fingers. Once you have your jackfruit shredded, it is then sautéed with green onion, garlic, and chopped cilantro. You plant-based “meat” filling is then ready to be wrapped!

Easy Wontons at Home

I know the idea of making wontons sound like A LOT of work.  But you truly will be surprised at how quickly and easily these little bite-sized flavor pockets can come together at home.  The key is to buy the pre-made wrappers that you can find in most grocery stores in the refrigerated section. We like the brand Nasoya. In the past, they weren’t always plant-based but now they do make a vegan variety that doesn’t include eggs.

Once you have your wrappers, the zesty jackfruit filling quickly comes together. We recommend getting the family involved in making the wontons. The more people involved, the faster they are done! Plus, they are fun to make.

We opted to use a folding method that looks like an envelope, but if you want to try other styles, you can also search for videos on YouTube.  There are many great video tutorials available and it’s fun to try different folds.  Kids will love it but so will adults!

Some Like It Hot!

This Jackfruit Sichuan Wonton Soup is not for the faint of heart.  It’s spicy.  But there is some discretion on how much of the chili oil mixture to add. The best way is to serve the soup and let each person add their own chili oil.  Heavy-handed on the spice or not added at all, this wonton soup is sure to please!
